What was the last significant purchase you made? a new car? a computer? a dinner at a fancy restaurant?
The odds are, whatever your most recent purchase, the reason you chose to purchase that particular product or service was because of a recommendation from somebody else. Recommendations - or referrals - are the single most common reason that business transactions occur. As customers, we like referrals. You would much rather go to a dentist or an accountant following someone's recommendation, rather than just trusting your luck following reading an advert.
Yet, despite the importance of referrals and despite the fact that customers crave referrals, companies are very poor at actively triggering referrals. In fact, practically every company the world over has a marketing plan which has a section for advertising, PR, brochure design and print, e-commerce, etc. But they do not have a section on referrals. In other words, companies do not strategically focus on increasing the amount of referral business they get even though their customers are craving referrals.
